Three Important Reasons Leaders Must Embrace Truth

IMPORTANT REASONS LEADERS MUST EMBRACE TRUTH

In my leadership experience, I discovered something about truth which I believe it is likely to be something common to other leaders as well. My discovery is that leaders find it easy to tell others the truth than to embrace it themselves. But just like Jesus emphatically stated in John 8:32, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” It is important as leaders that we not only think truth is something other people need except us.

For leaders to lead with freedom and not be under any form of bondage, they must be committed to knowing the truth and embracing it. Although, this is difficult because truth hurts, yet, it helps. That’s why I need to share with you three vital reasons you must embrace truth as a leader.

1. Truth Hurts Our Ego. Leadership often comes with its pride and that’s why many leaders have difficulty in embracing the truth. When it comes to hearing the truth, a leader’s ego is under fire.

Truth and personal pride cannot cope together. Whether truth about our marriage, private lives and leadership – we must bury our ego for truth to help us – otherwise it will hurt us.

2. Truth Hurts Our Assumptions. Many times we are wrong because we assume things to be right too often. Most leadership mistakes are committed through assumptions. Leaders must not be given to assumptions.

Leadership that works requires clarity in our thoughts and decisions. Whenever we settle for assumptions, we give truth the permission to hurt us.

Leaders who don’t wants to be hurt by the truth must let go of assumption style of leading into facing the reality of what is right in their lives. It is only when a leader is willing to accept a reality that truth helps rather than hurts.

3. Truth Hurts Our Comfort Zone. Nothing is bad about comfort. But everything is bad about staying so long in a comfort zone.

For leaders, comfort zone can become a death zone if there is no drive again to make progress or lead the people into greater heights. At this point, comfort becomes poisonous.

When comfort is disallowing a leader from doing the will of God, then it has become a dangerous zone and a leader needs to embrace the truth here, to come out of God zone, to keep moving, to continue reaching forward until The Lord says, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!”

Every time a leader decides to stay in comfort zone, truth begins to hurt rather than to heal.

We need to do one thing to help ourselves. RESPOND RIGHTLY TO THE TRUTH. DON’T REACT. Responding to the truth means permitting truth to change us for better. Leaders who respond to the truth are helped by it. Leaders who react to the truth are hurt by it. Will you respond? Are you going to start embracing the truth henceforth?
