Security of the Heart: A Necessity for Agents of Transformation (I)

“Keep and guard your heart with all diligence and above all that you guard, for out of it flows the springs of life” – Proverbs 4:23 Amp

The biological heart is a very important organ in the body. It is an organ that supports and sustains all other organs and even the body system as a whole because it is the organ that is responsible for the circulation of blood in the body, without which the man dies, no wonder the Bible says: “the life of the flesh is in the blood” (Lev.17:11). But as important as this organ is, it cannot be compared with the heart that the Bible is talking about.

The heart in this context is the center of intellectualism, reasoning, thinking, decision making and the center of life. It defines the man and expresses the detail about him. It can either make or mar him.

“What is primarily responsible for where you go per time is not your legs but your heart, it has the steering and controls the legs where they go.”

What determines what you see, say or do is mainly your heart. The heart is basically the controller of all the activities that a man performs. Two main forces are contending to gain control of the heart of every man and whichever the man yields his heart to will control the heart  (Romans 6:16).

“There cannot be any positive transformation in loosed heart where everything is dumped.”

“Keep” and “Guard” are highly sensitive security words. They are used for securing territories or homes where treasures are kept. Such a place will be manned by highly intelligent and conscious people, with required weapons, who are ready to do everything possible to defend the treasures available there.

A place where there is no treasure needs not to be guarded. Since it is the heart that determines the life of a man and what comes out of it, necessity is laid on every agent of transformation to guard it jealously.

Things that Loose-guard our Hearts

The territory of a loose-guarded heart is vulnerable for attacks and exploitation and within the shortest period such a heart will be reduced to nothing. A loose-guarded heart can never make any positive transformation, no matter how minute, because all the treasures there would have exploited.

The heart of men could be exploited by the factors found in Psalm 1:1, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of the sinners nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

1. Walking in the counsel of the ungodly

The ungodly people are people that have refused to have God in their knowledge and have been given over to reprobate minds (Romans 1:28).

The ungodly people cannot have any godly counsel. The heart gets information mainly through the eyes and the ears (2Pet. 2:8), then process the information and put up its reaction.

“The counsels that your heart is receiving determines the state of your heart”

“He that walketh with the wise shall be wise but the companion of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20). The ungodly are foolish and if you are in their company, your heart becomes foolish, cursed, unregenerate and untransformed.

 2. Standing in the way of sinners

Having walked for a long with the ungodly, the untransformed heart gets comfortable and take time to stand in the way of sinners. Sinners can only fill your heart with sinful thoughts. Your sinner friends and companions can only fill your heart with unrighteousness because that is what they are practicing.

 3. Sitting in the seat of the scornful

The scornful have an advanced status in unrighteousness. The state of sitting is a state of comfort. The scornful sit down secured in wickedness and evil and any attempt to correct them, makes them to laugh you to scorn. There is no meaningful transformation for anyone that sits with such a people.

As I pause here, a look at 2Pet 2:28 often make me tremble. “For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds”.

How men torment their own soul and make it cry aloud!

Where you are defines who you are! Pro. 13:20a.

Therefore, be careful with who and where you are standing, who you walk with, the counsel you take, the company you keep from day to day.

It is your responsibility to keep and guard your heart.

Watch the events you attend, the relationship you keep and get exposed to, the conversation you engage in and the thought you entertain in your heart.

Keep thy heart with all diligence!
