“So she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said.” – Genesis 16:2NIV
During my personal devotion at a time, the Lord dealt kindly with me on the issue I like to discuss with you today. And I believe you may also share in the dealings of His kindness with me. It’s about Sarai, who later became Sarah, the wife of old patriarch of faith, Abraham.
God had already told them His plan for their lives, but the questions remain: how will it come to pass, when will it come to pass and how can we work it out?
There are lessons to learn from both of them about WORKING OUT GOD’S PLAN FOR US.
#1 – HUMAN ALTERNATIVE CANNOT WORK OUT GOD’S PLAN
Sarah was HOPING in GOD, but she had alternative – Hagar – her maidservant. And ASSUMED her ALTERNATIVE could work out God’s plan (Gen 16:1). Please be careful of this.
When thinking about working out God’s plan for your life, don’t bring in your alternatives.
#2 – WAITING ON GOD IS NOT WASTING YOUR TIME
How I wish God will make this very clear to us, that we may know the difference between WAITING ON GOD and WASTING YOUR TIME.
Many people think you WASTE YOUR TIME AND LIFE when you are WAITING ON GOD. So they want you to stop being FOOLISH and just ACT.
But the truth is: you can’t work out God’s plan for your life by accepting such myth. Remember Isaiah 40:31.
#3 – ASSUMPTION IS DANGEROUS
I was driving towards a place sometimes ago. And because none of us in the car knew the right way, and on getting to a place, I ASSUMED it must be the way.
But we missed it. I was wrong. In fact, we suffered. That’s why when it comes to working out God’s plan for our lives, ASSUMPTION CAN BE DANGEROUS.
#4 – NEVER MAKE YOUR WORD THE FINAL AUTHORITY
When your word and not God’s word becomes the final solution to work out God’s plan for your life, quickly reverse it. Not doing so may even lead to abortion of God’s plan or contaminate it.
When it comes to working out God’s plan, always check who is SPEAKING – YOU or GOD?
#5 – UNDERSTAND GOD’S WAY
We miss God’s plan for our lives most times because we don’t understand God’s ways. The Bible says God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:9).
And that means we can only work out His PLAN for our lives by understanding and following His ways. Remember, there is way that seem right to a man but the end are ways of death (Proverbs 14:12).
#6 – THINK ONLY GOD’S THOUGHT
In Isaiah 55:9, God also said His thought is higher than our thought. In other words, your OWN THOUGHT cannot work out God’s PLAN for your life.
You need to THINK God’s THOUGHT. And how can this be possible? It is simple. THINK the WORD of GOD. I hope you know man’s words are the expression of his thoughts?
Also, God’s WORD is the EXPRESSION of God’s THOUGHT. Therefore, THINK GOD’S THOUGHT and you will KNOW how to work out HIS PLAN for your life.
#7 – RESPOND WITH OBEDIENCE
During my study this morning, the Holy Spirit made it clear to me that, “There is always an EXPECTED RESPONSE that ACTIVATES everything that GOD has PURPOSED to do through US – it is our RESPONSE of OBEDIENCE.”
The point is: the STEP between where we are now, and where God wants us to be is OBEDIENCE. Every ACT of GOD in a man’s life hinges on his OBEDIENCE. That’s how to work out God’s PLAN for our lives.
#8 – BE PATIENT STILL
Someone said, “The reason they refer to a sick person in the hospital as a PATIENT is because the PATIENT must be PATIENT to receive every treatment and care, also, the Care-givers must also handle the sick PATIENTLY.
Anyway, the KEY word here is, we need PATIENCE as the fruit of the Spirit to work out God’s PLAN for our lives (Galatians 5:22). I like you to understand that GOD IS NEVER LATE.
He’s always on time, and don’t forget – HE DOESN’T WORK WITH YOUR WATCH, WALL-CLOCK OR CALENDAR. Yet, God is never late. Be PATIENT STILL.
