7 PERSONALITY TRAITS OF GREAT LEADERS

I learnt recently that our capacity to grow determines our capacity to lead. Best leaders never stop growing. Why? Leadership stops where growth stops. We all have non-stop obligations to keep growing if we really desire to continue to make impact in the lives of other people.

If you are like me with a strong desire to sustain your impact level on people around you – your spouse, children, subordinates, friends and even your enemies; here are few ways I believe you can build capacity for growth.

1. Place Priority on Growth. You must understand the value of growth if you want to grow. Then you need to give growth a special and top place in your life. Sustainable leadership impact is more than a wish. It comes when growth is placed at the top of your life priorities.

2. Grow Pass Your Past. Someone once said, “We are product of our past but not prisoners of it.” We ought not to indeed. And the way never to become the prisoner – never to allow our past to hold us back from making full proof of our leadership impact is to grow pass our past. Grow above your past. Grow beyond your past. You will sustain your impact on people around you if they come checking and discover to their surprise that you are better than the person they used to know yesterday, last month, last year because you have grown beyond your past.

3. Grow Daily. The simple secret to growing pass your past is to grow daily. Strive to be better everyday. Read everyday. Learn everyday. Pray everyday. Risk everyday. Stretch everyday. Everyday is an opportunity to grow. Make use of it.

A single day is enough to make us a little larger or, another time, a little smaller.

– Paul Klee

4. Never Go on Growth Break. Most leaders don’t stop growing but they often go on growth break. Bad! It is very dangerous to your leadership sustainable impact. Often than not, the vulnerability of most falling leaders happen when they give themselves break in their passionate quest for growth. Never go on growth break.

5. Never Outgrow Growth. Using the word stop growing would have been ideal. Meanwhile, some leaders don’t stop growing they simply outgrow growth. They will come to a point where growth is only for people they are leading not themselves any longer. This point is called leadership crash point. It’s a point that great leaders who have risen to the very top experience a terrible crash beyond a manageable repair. To avoid this, keep growing. You can never outgrow growth as long as you are alive. Let the only thing that will stop your growth be death. And of course, death itself begins your eternal growth in Heaven.

Growth: Capacity building for sustainable leadership impact comes when you…

  • Place Priority on Growth
  • Grow Pass Your Past
  • Grow Daily
  • Never Go on Growth Break
  • Never Outgrow Growth

My scars remind me that I did indeed survive my deepest wounds. That in itself is an accomplishment. And they bring to mind something else, too. They remind me that the damage life has inflicted on me has, in many places, left me stronger and more resilient. What hurt me in the past has actually made me better equipped to face the present.
