One important reason to listen to a great mentor is because every good mentor must have passed through the path those who are coming behind are about to take. Paul, the apostle is a great mentor to every minister who cares about how to fulfill the ministry he or she received from the Lord.

When I listened to Apostle Paul in Colossians 4:17 sending a message to Archippus to “Take heed to the ministry which he had received from the Lord that he may fulfill it.” The Holy Spirit drew my attention to that advice from a great mentor which every leader or minister of the gospel needs to fulfill the ministry God has released into our hands. Ministry is God’s business entrusted to us for the fulfillment of God’s plan for His church. We cannot afford to fail in this business.

The advice given to us is, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord that you may fulfill it.” The challenge here is: Take heed! So, I like to share with you how taking heed helps you fulfill the ministry – no matter what it is.

1. FOCUS ON THE MINISTRY

Don’t get distracted with other things God has not committed to your hands. Your focus must be fully on the ministry you have received from the Lord.

2. PUT YOUR BEST INTO THE MINISTRY

Do your best. Put in the best. Be brave, determined! And do it well. Let there be no room for average commitment. Commit your all to the ministry. That’s the way to fulfill it.

3. DO IT CAREFULLY

Ministry is a serious work that must be done by serious minded ministers. It must be done carefully if you are going to fulfill – achieve God’s plan for it (See 2 Chronicles 19:5-6).

4. LIVE IN THE FEAR OF GOD

Don’t walk out on God. Never take God for granted. Strive for holiness by being conscious of God’s wrath towards those who compromise His standard (2 Chronicles 19:7).

5. ACT QUICKLY AND FIRMLY

Slothfulness in ministry brings failure and damage upon God’s business entrusted into our care. Don’t be slothful. Ministry requires sense of urgency in doing the will of God. It also demands firmness in our stand on the doctrines of Christ in this world that is turning upside down against God’s principles. Be firm in truth ( Ezra 4:22).

I strongly believe that God will help us to fulfill the ministry we have received from Him if we can learn to take heed in these five areas.
