There are great leaders and there are ordinary leaders. Some leaders just seem to attain greatness among others. But the question is: What’s their secret?
Let’s look at seven key traits that has always distinguished great leaders from ordinary leaders.
1. GREAT LEADERS ARE GREAT SERVANTS
The paradox of leadership limits those who don’t understand it. And that’s why they never become great leaders.
When it comes to becoming a great leader, it begins with being a great servant.
David was a great leader in Israel, but once a great servant as an errand boy, forgotten and abandoned in the bush. And after he became a leader, he never ceased to serve.
2. GREAT LEADERS QUESTION STATUS QUO
Every leader who attains greatness never settled with arrival mentality. They always believe things can be better and ready to give all it takes to achieve the impossible. They are always thinking about movement not monument.
3. GREAT LEADERS DARE TERRIFYING GIANTS
They confront challenges that others are always afraid to confront. They are courageous, bold and confident in God’s power at work in them. Great leaders explore new territories. They are pioneers. They are ready to blaze the trail despite the risks, fear, and dangers involved.
4. GREAT LEADERS ARE BURDEN BEARERS AND EXCHANGERS
They always bear the burden of others. And much more, they turn burdens of other people to freedom. They set their people free from oppression. Their goal is to always make life better for people around them.
5. GREAT LEADERS PROMISE A FUTURE
In other words, they give hope to those who are following them. They help them see a future of glory, change, peace, transformation, and they are willing to sacrifice their gains in order to make it possible.
6. GREAT LEADERS EMPOWER OTHERS
Great leaders are not power consumers, they are power distributors. They empower others to break their own records. They make provisions for their followers to outperform them. Their joy is seeing people who are led by them rising beyond where they stopped.
7. GREAT LEADERS OVERCOME SELF
Self is the enemy of greatness. Those who cannot shift focus from what they stand to gain for self can never become great as leaders. The day a leader decide to overcome seeking great things for self and focus on seeking great things for God…greatness begins (Jeremiah 45:5).
I like you to know that these seven personality traits were found in the greatest leader – Jesus Christ. He possessed them and showed them in His day-to-day activities while He was on earth. And I believe that as He is…so are we in this world. Greatness is accessible to all who can have His heart and develop these seven personality traits.
What are they? Serve greatly, question status quo, dare terrifying giants, be a burden bearer and exchanger, promise a future, empower others, and overcome self.
I see greatness in you!
