Your uniqueness defines your ability and your abilities define your path in life. It is not enough to have special abilities, they must be maximized. When our unique, God-given abilities are fully maximized, fully utilized and rightly tailored, we are not going to be limited in life. I like to share with you four ways to start maximizing your unique ability.
1. Discover It. Undiscovered ability is a wasted ability. What is your uniqueness? Have you discovered that thing that you do exceptionally well? You need to know your strengths. Examine your gifts. Do a thorough search to understand your capabilities, and your God-intended design. Until you discover what God has put in you, it will remain dormant. God is willing to reveal to you if you care to know.
How do you know your special abilities? Look away from yourself to your designer. Look into your life experiences. Check out on your failures and successes. God never allows people to wander through life unaware of what He designed them for.
Who in the world am I? Ah, that’s the great puzzle.
― Lewis Carroll
2. Develop It. God – given ability inside every one is a deposit. It is a seed. It can grow. You make it grow by developing it. And it is your duty to develop your special abilities. Don’t wait for anyone to do it for you. There are basic practices that develops our unique abilities. First, live a life of fellowship with God in prayer, study and meditation on the word, obedience to God’s will and fasting. Fasting develops our unique abilities, strengthen our inner life, gives courage and makes you physically, mentally and spiritually fit.
3. Deploy It. Many of us have great abilities in us that we have not deployed. It is not just enough to discover and develop your God – given abilities, you must deploy them. Position them before your challenges. Don’t bow to “no way” anymore. Every time you are confronted with “No way,” let the strength in you be deployed. Let challenges before you know your God can make a way for you where there’s no way. You will never learn to make full proof of your life until you learn how to deploy your special abilities.
4. Dedicate It. The way to maximize our unique abilities is to get our eyes off ourselves and live for divine assignment. Live for God. Commit yourself to God’s use. That’s what it means to dedicate our abilities.
For instance, when David was ready to confront Goliath, he was confronted with intimidation from both Goliath and his own brothers. But David dedicated his ability unto God (1Samuel 17:29). David was committed to divine purpose. He knew there was a cause for coming out at a time the Giant Philistine was abusing the God of Israel.
David would not watch an uncircumcised pagan to insult the Lord of hosts. “And David said, “What have I done now? Is there not a cause?”
The reason for confronting Goliath is not because I want to show my ego. It is because I have dedicated my ability to God who gave me. The ability in the first place was given to carry out God’s purpose.
I heard David said, I was not anointed by God for ordinary show off. I was anointed for the deliverance of my people (Acts 10:38). There is a cause that I need to stand up to. I have dedicated my ability so I cannot keep quiet in a time like this. David became an example of someone who discovered, developed, deployed and dedicated his God-given ability.
“Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistine saw that their champion was dead, they fled.” (1Samuel 17:51)
